Introduction Essential or primary hypertension (HTN), defined as an office blood pressure (BP) ≥140/90 mmHg with no identifiable cause, is a well-documented risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and the most common cardiovascular condition to be seen in primary care.1 It also represents the strongest single modifiable risk factor with regards to future morbidity and mortality.2,3 As such, current guidelines advocate pharmacological treatment if lifestyle measures are insufficient.
