COVID-19: almost everything you need to know

‘Life in the fast lane’ (litfl.com), an Australian/New Zealand medical website, provides materials written by physicians and other HCPs. The current review https://litfl.com/coronavirus/ looks at all aspects of the coronavirus pandemic including assessment and management, from an Australia and New Zealand critical care perspective. It provides an excellent series of Adult Emergency Medicine Radiology Topics each month. These self-guided educational slides were first published on EMGuideWire.com and are peer reviewed.

EASD e-learning on diabetes and COVID-19

Two BJC editorial board members feature heavily in the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) e-learning programmes on COVID-19 and diabetes, available on-line at: https://easd-elearning.org/covid-19/

Consultant diabetologist, Dr Amar Puttanna, (Good Hope Hospital, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust) provides information on diabetes and COVID-19 in two short videos emphasising how this information is likely to change-almost daily. Based on evidence from China and Italy, Dr Puttanna assesses what we know so far on managing diabetes during the crisis.

People in the UK with diabetes are not currently recommended for ‘shielding’ but are for ‘social distancing’, which may impact on exercise and blood glucose levels and glycaemic control.

Another video, ‘Keeping diabetes teams together’, features Consultant in diabetes, Professor Ketan Dhatariya (Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital) who explains why keeping diabetes teams intact is vital to the COVID-19 effort. He urges hospital managers to try and make sure that “diabetes teams are not decimated and not put on the frontline”. When it comes to providing care at time of hospital discharge and (onwards) to community care, diabetes teams are “key in trying to maintain patient safety”, Professor Dhatariya, concludes.
