BSH 2023: collaboration, coordination and cooperation – 25in25

J. Aaron Henry

Abstract

25in25 The meeting began with an update on the 25in25 initiative from BSH Chair-Elect Dr Lisa Anderson (St George’s University Hospital, London). This national quality improvement initiative, led by the BSH in collaboration with over 54 national and international healthcare organisations, has the goal of reducing heart failure deaths by 25% over the next 25 years. With already over one million people in the UK living with heart failure, a number which is expected to double by 2040, the ambitious initiative is eagerly awaited. In the UK alone this could translate to over 10,000 lives saved per year. A population health approach underpins th

Abstract

Introduction Heart failure (HF) is a complex disease, characterised by the reduced capacity of the heart to pump blood, supply or fill with blood, and is a cause of hospitalisation.1 HF is rapidly growing in developed and developing countries, with an estimated prevalence of more than 37 million individuals.2 HF is associated with a high rate of hospitalisation and it is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide.1-3 Existing studies have shown that several comorbid factors and biomarkers are associated with HF and its prognosis.4 Recent studies have associated subclinical hypothyroidism with increased blood pressure, insulin resistan

New European Society of Cardiology recommendations published

BJCardio Staff

Abstract

Chair of the writing group Professor Christian Sticherling (Universitätsspital Basel, Switzerland) said: “Traditionally we interrupted anticoagulation during device implantation and restarted it afterwards. And we bridged with heparin around the time of the operation. The new recommendation is to continue to give the VKA and perform the operation without any bridging. That shows the lowest rate of perioperative bleeding.” He added: “Also new is the recommendation not to interrupt VKAs during ablation and particularly during pulmonary vein isolation which is the most common type of ablation nowadays.” The paper, produced by the EHRA,

News from the BSH 16th Annual Autumn Meeting

Colin Cunnington

Abstract

Counting the cost of acute heart failure In the first keynote lecture, Professor John McMurray (BHF Cardiovascular Research Centre, Glasgow) began by addressing the definition of acute heart failure (HF). He felt the term ‘acute’ was unhelpful, as it can be applied to a broad spectrum of clinical presentation, from the rapid onset of acute pulmonary oedema, to the subacute deterioration in chronic HF symptoms (predominantly peripheral oedema) that culminates in hospitalisation. Accordingly, the new 2013 American College of Cardiology Foundation (ACCF)/American Heart Association (AHA) HF guidelines refer to ‘the hospitalised patient’,
