Different cardiac phenotypes of sickle cell disease revealed using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging

Candice Park, Payal Desai, Subha Raman, Regina Crawford, Yuchi Han

Abstract

Introduction Sickle cell disease (SCD) is the most common inherited haematologic disorder in the US, affecting over 100,000 individuals.1,2 In SCD, deoxygenated haemoglobin S (HbS) polymerisation leads to sickling and destruction of red blood cells. Patients experience profound anaemia and vaso-occlusive events. Prolonged capillary inflammation and repeated episodes of ischaemia and reperfusion result in chronic end-organ damage, including the heart and lungs.3 Sickle cell cardiomyopathy contributes to the significant morbidity and mortality among adult patients with SCD. A study by Hamideh and colleagues revealed that 31.6% of total death ce

Single-dimensional estimation of LV size using echo and MRI: effect of measurement location

Cheng William Hong, Zoran B Popovic, Amanda R Vest, Scott D Flamm, Michael A Bolen

Abstract

Introduction In volume overload states, such as aortic regurgitation (AR), ischaemic cardiomyopathy (ICM), and non-ischaemic cardiomyopathy (NICM), spherical dilation occurs.1 Khouri et al. described four remodelling patterns based on the indexed left ventricle (LV) end-diastolic volume and LV concentricity.2 Standard LV chamber quantification, according to the American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) guidelines, involves obtaining a single-dimensional measurement of the LV diameter from the parasternal long-axis acoustic window at the level of mitral valve leaflet tips. Although it is the combination of qualitative and quantitative measure
