BJC Learning Acute coronary syndrome

Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) affects more than 90,000 individuals in the UK each year, and despite advances in interventional management, the burden of morbidity and re-infarction remains high. Effective prevention and management of ACS requires a coordinated approach from primary care and cardiology colleagues, aimed at early identification, management of ongoing modifiable risk factors, and holistic rehabilitation programmes after hospital discharge.

Four educational modules provide you with an update on current evidence and recommendations to help guide your management of patients post-ACS:
-The scope of the problem in the UK
-Long-term antithrombotic and cardiovascular risk factor management
-Lifestyle and lipids
-Cardiac rehabilitation programmes – shared care to optimise outcomes

The programme has been developed by cardiologists Dr Hussain Contractor (Consultant Interventional Cardiologist, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust) and Dr Rafail Kotronias (Clinical Research Fellow, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, University of Oxford), expert clinical nurse Nikki Gardiner (Clinical Nurse Manager for Cardio-respiratory Rehabilitation, University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust), and primary care expert Professor Terry McCormack (Professor of Primary Care Cardiovascular Medicine, Hull York Medical School).

Aimed at healthcare professionals involved in the long-term management of patients after an ACS, each of these e-learning modules offers 1 hour of CPD-accredited learning on completion.

ACS module 1: the scope of the problem in the UK

Released 31 August 2025   Programme: Acute coronary syndrome 1 CPD/CME credit

  • Rates of myocardial infarction in the UK, and associated survival rates
  • Interventional strategies for the management of acute coronary syndrome (ACS)
  • Re-infarction rates, and how to determine patients at highest risk of re-infarction
  • Policies that could be implemented for the prevention of ACS events

ACS module 2: long-term antithrombotic and cardiovascular risk factor management

Released 31 August 2025   Programme: Acute coronary syndrome 1 CPD/CME credit

  • The role of dual antiplatelet therapy in post-acute coronary syndrome management, and appropriate duration of such therapy
  • Optimisation of other cardiovascular risk factors – namely blood pressure, diabetes and lipid management

ACS module 3: lifestyle and lipids

Released 31 August 2025   Programme: Acute coronary syndrome 1 CPD/CME credit

  • The long-term effects of myocardial infarction on patients' overall health and wellbeing
  • The role of lifestyle, diet and behavioural interventions in managing cardiovascular risk
  • Use of full lipid profiles to guide management, according to recent NICE recommendations
  • Current guidance for the treatment of dyslipidaemia

ACS module 4: cardiac rehabilitation programmes – shared care to optimise outcomes

Released 31 August 2025   Programme: Acute coronary syndrome 1 CPD/CME credit

  • Discrepancies between recommendations on managing acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients post-hospital discharge, and current practice
  • Strategies to optimise shared care of patients post-ACS
  • Current guidelines on the role of cardiac rehabilitation programmes
  • The role of the multidisciplinary team in providing long-term followup for post-ACS patients
